Went on a long trip

Sony is very open to creating a 3D enabled handheld system, but can't say for sure whether or not such technology will make its way to the PS Vita, Mick Hocking, senior director of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, has told Develop.

Quizzed on the possibility of 3D on PS Vita, Hocking said: "As you know our purpose at Sony is to build the world's most awesome handheld games machine, and I think the focus - right now at least - is to build the most capable handheld games machine on the market.

"Of course in the future we may look to build the 3D experience on a handheld. The tech is rapidly evolving, so we may well in the future include a high-quality 3D experience on the small screens. Whether this comes to Vita will have to be seen."

That's a very firm 'we might', but then again, 'we might not'.

Hocking wasn't stuck on the fence when it came to bigging up the PS Vita and the positive reception the handheld has received.

"Yeah we were absolutely delighted," said Hocking. "The handheld market has become so competitive now, and it's a very different world since we launched the first PSP.

"We thought very long and hard internally about what sort of device we wanted to create, and I think it was very important to deliver such a capable device, and go dual-analogue. I think it's gone down really well because it's differentiated itself from the competition out there."

PS Vita is expected to launch late this year or early in 2012.

Hocking will be delivering a Develop Conference keynote - The Stereoscopic 3D Experience - The first year of 3D on PlayStation 3 - on Thursday morning. Our own Martin Gaston and Neon Kelly will be doing their best to bring you the latest info from the conference - that's assuming they don't spend their entire time dropping 2p coins into those hugely addictive coin drop machines.
